Heir of Fire Book Report

Elliot Bywater

Title: Heir of Fire

Grade: 8

Author: Sarah J. Maas

Number of pages: 562

WHY DID THE AUTHOR CHOOSE THIS TITLE

I think the author chose this title because in the book she reveals that she is the heir of Brannon, an old king with very powerful fire magic, and she inherits his magic. So she is the heir of fire.

SUMMARY

At the end of the last book she was sent to a kingdom across the sea called Wendlyn and. She is there to get information about the wyrdkeys, they are three very powerful keys when put together they can open a portal to other realms, from the queen of the fae.

A fae named Rowan meets her in Wendlyn and tells her that Maeve the queen of fae wants to see her. They travel for three days on a small path that leads to a fortress in the mountains called Mist-ward. She meets Maeve and is told that she has to show her potential of magic to get the information that she needs.

She trains every day for a couple months learning how to use her fire magic. The first week or two she is trying to shift into her fae form and the only way that she can shift is by instinct, like when she is in danger. after she masters how to shift she is then training to make a shield out of fire. Rowan throws ice daggers at her until she can control where the fire goes and how big or small it is. She also learns how to make fire daggers and walls of flame.

One day while they were training the found a boat by a cave that was close to the ocean in the side of a cliff. Rowan shifted and flew in to the cave to see what it was. When he cam back he flew to the safety of the forest before shifting and telling Celaena that there were 200 soldiers with General Narrok, a feared Adarlan general, and 3 of those creatures. He also saw that they were planning to attack the fortress along the main path.

When they got back they warned the others and started making preparations for the battle. They planned the whole next day. Celaena suggested that he sends for his friends. Two days later Celaena was awoken at dawn by Rowan yelling at her to get ready and that they were here.

Someone had betrayed them. There was a growing black smudge on the horizon, they dodged every warning bell and trap. When the darkness reached the fortress the three creatures stepped out along with Narrok. A whip of darkness struck the barrier. There was a scream. The soldiers had been let in through the secret tunnel. Celaena stepped past the barrier and the darkness lashed at her. She put up a wall of flame and the darkness recoiled, only to strike again. The wall of flame grew all the way around the barrier. They pulled out their swords and attacked so she attacked with hers. They saw her sword and paused, they said she was not the queen of darkness or Brannon. she realized that the creatures were called the Valg, a demon race that lives in the realm of darkness and ice and wind. Two wolves, an osprey, a tall man and a mountain cat came racing towards the darkness. She made a path of fire and they ran past her into the fortress.

Inside Rowan was chopping down soldier after soldier when two wolves jumped onto two soldiers, biting their necks, tossing them aside and grabbing another. Bas the scout leader had let them in, Luca had told him. the others that helped him wanted the power the Valg offered.

Celaena’s flames winked out and the darkness swallowed her whole. the darkness forced her to watch all of her worst memories, about her parents death, Nehemia’s death, Sam’s death, and everyone she had let down. She was falling into a pit of darkness. She hit the bottom and saw the memory of when her parents died.

She was eight years old. The king of Adarlan came for a meeting. She lost control of her fire during the meeting and her mother had to drown it out with her water magic. The next day her and her parents went to their manor two days away. On the second night her mother gave her the Amulet of Orynth, it had the white stag on the front.

That night there was a storm of pure darkness. She got scared and climbed into her parents bed, it felt colder than usual but that was probably from the open window.

She was woken by Lady Marion, her maid, screaming. Marion ran over and picked her up and walked out of the room. That day Marion sat with her holding her both of them crying. It was so quiet while they were waiting for everyone to get there when they heard a lone horse ride up to the house.

Lady Marion opened the kitchen door and told her to run for the bridge above the river. She ran and grabbed a tree to look back and saw the man push her into the wall and then he cut, Lady Marion went limp. she turned around and kept running for the bridge. The man jumped on his horse and started after her. She tripped, her foot stuck in a root. The little people from the woods came and unwrapped her foot, letting her get back up and keep running. The man was catching up to her. She ran as fast as she could. She jumped right onto the bridge, and fell into the ice cold water. The man had cut the bridge.

Then all of the people that died and she couldn’t save told her to get up, and she did. She got up and used her fire power to blast the princes away. She fought two of the Valg princes and burned them to pieces. She was starting to get drained of her power when the third attacked. It cam at her with it’s sword and she blocked it just barely and got knocked to the ground. Rowan gave her his magic and she disintegrated the last Valg prince.

Her and Rowan were sitting on the cliff edge when Celaena realized where the third wyrdkey was. She and Rowan went to Doranelle and they got the information about the wyrdkeys and she took Rowan with her. That night she got on a boat heading back to Adarlan.
